In its entirety, Whistlejacket is of huge proportion and the charismatic expression and detailing of the horse makes it such an arresting piece. It was painted for the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Whistlejacket's owner and Stubbs' patron, and there is a myth that Stubbs originally intended to depict the nobleman astride the horse in a powerful battle pose. This idea, that the painting is unfinished, is enhanced by its lack of background which you could argue has worked in its favour: not only to highlight the majesty of the horse further, but it has also allowed us to install vivid block colour backgrounds to these cushions for a fun, contemporary twist.
