Painted when Monet was still an art student, 'La Pointe de la Hève' depicts the beach at Sainte-Adresse near Monet's home town of Le Havre. It was one of two landscapes that launched Monet's career when exhibited in 1865 at the Paris Salon. At the Salon, some viewers confused Monet's signature with that of Édouard Manet. When the older artist received compliments for a painting that he had not painted, he sought out Monet, beginning one of the richest relationships ever between prodigious painters.
