'Bathers at La Grenouillère' depicts a popular boating and bathing place with a floating café, on the Seine to the west of Paris. Both Monet and Renoir, desperately poor at this stage of their careers, chose La Grenouillère as a subject, hoping to sell to the middle-class holiday goers that frequented it. Monet, here, also employed particularly free handling and lose colour to create a stunning representation of water, foliage and boats in archetypal Abstract Impressionist style.
